Many children leave the house without breakfast in the morning and sweets serve as break bread.

(19.08.2010) A survey by the Forsa Institute on behalf of the Techniker health insurance company found in the survey of 1,000 parents that about every seventh child does not have breakfast before school. There are many reasons for this, ranging from the pupils' "poor appetite" (25 percent of those questioned) to "no time in the morning" (approximately 30 percent of those surveyed). The nutrition scientist at the Techniker health insurance, Alexandra Krotz, emphasized once again how important the morning meal is: "Children are only really fit for school when they have breakfast in the morning." This is how she advises parents in any case to take the time for a corresponding morning meal. However, when school starts at 8 a.m., many students have to leave the house shortly after 7 a.m. A breakfast of around 30 minutes would have to start at around 6:30 a.m. However, it can also be understood that most children are not really hungry at the time and that one or the other prefers to sleep half an hour longer. So if you “don't want to eat anything in the morning, you should (…) drink at least a glass of milk or a little fruit juice,” says the nutritionist.

As a result of not having breakfast, the ability to concentrate at school was severely reduced and the children were also more easily irritable and nervous, the expert explained.

As a replacement for the canceled morning meal, many parents give their children cash for the break bread purchase. However, the money is often invested by the children in chocolate or other sweets to satisfy their cravings during the long breaks. “The (sweets) let the insulin level shoot up and then quickly drop again. There is a risk of a drop in performance, ”says Kortz. Therefore, she recommends as a snack snack foods that provide a lot of long-lasting energy. So in their opinion would be z. B. a whole grain bread with curd or bananas ideal.

The AOK family study 2010, which was published in June, also emphasized that regular eating together and clear structural specifications protect children in particular from being overweight. As part of the AOK study, around 2000 parents from all over Germany were interviewed and among other things the causes of overweight were examined. The study found that only 64 percent of children have breakfast with their parents on a regular basis and that children who do not or rarely have breakfast with their parents are around twice as likely to be overweight. Having breakfast together strengthens the children both physically and mentally and gives them security, according to the family study. This demonstrably reduces the risk of being overweight and the risk of mental illness. (fp)
